About FICS

FICS (FAST NU - IBA Sukkur – COMSATS University Islamabad – SZABIST Islamabad) is a network of four leading universities of Pakistan which is established to promote mathematics research and academic activities in the partner universities. The founding members of the FICS are committed towards active collaboration to promote quality research in mathematics. The network will host regular seminars and workshops to nurture academic activities in mathematics. The following faculty members are designated as FICS representatives from partner universities.

About the Workshop

The workshop is intended for students and faculty members from different many backgrounds which includes Biology, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Our focus will be on Computational Pathology, an emerging discipline concerned with methods for understanding disease by analyzing digitized histology and radiology images.

The speakers will show some snippets of computational pathology research in lab to demonstrate the value of analytics of information-rich, high-resolution whole-slide images (WSIs, the so-called Big Cancer Image Data) for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Examples of how histological motifs extracted from digital pathology image data are likely to lead to patient stratification for precision medicine will also be presented. Some of the main challenges in digital pathology and opportunities for exploring new unchartered territories will be discussed at the end.

1st FICS Workshop
Prof. Nasir Rajpoot

Nasir Rajpoot is Professor in Computational Pathology at the University of Warwick, where started his academic career as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in 2001. He was recently awarded the Wolfson Fellowship by the UK Royal Society and the Turing Fellowship by the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national data science institute. At Warwick, he is the founding Head of Tissue Image Anayltics (TIA) lab since 2012. He also holds an Honorary Scientist position at the Department of Pathology, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust since 2016. The focus of current research in his lab is on developing novel computational pathology algorithms with applications to computer-assisted grading of cancer and image-based markers for prediction of cancer progression and survival. Prof Rajpoot has been active in the digital pathology community for almost a decade now, having co-chaired several meetings in the histology image analysis (HIMA) series since 2008 and served as a founding PC member of the SPIE Digital Pathology meeting since 2012. He was the General Chair of the UK Medical Image Understanding and Analysis (MIUA) conference in 2010, and the Technical Chair of the British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC) in 2007. He has guest edited a special issue of Machine Vision and Applications on Microscopy Image Analysis and its Applications in Biology in 2012, and a special section on Multivariate Microscopy Image Analysis in the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging in 2010. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and member of the ACM, the British Association of Cancer Research (BACR), the European Association of Cancer Research (EACR), and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). He will be chairing the European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP) at Warwick in 2019.

Dr. Ahmad Raza Shahid

Dr. Ahmad Raza Shahid is currently the PI of the Medical Imaging and Diagnostics (MID) lab at COMSATS University, Islamabad. He holds a PhD from York, UK and an MS from MSU, USA. He has more than 6 years of post-PhD experience and more than 4 years of industrial experience. His areas of interest include medical image processing and natural language processing.

Dr. Amir Hanif Dar (CUI, Islamabad)

Dr. Amir Hanif Dar got his Ph.D. in Computer Applications from Beihang University, Beijing, China in 2003. Currently, his research is focused on medical diagnostic through different image modalities. Currently he is associated with Department of Computer Science and Medical Image Diagnostic (MID) Lab which is established under the National Center of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI).

Dr. Mubeen Shafique (AFIR, Rawalpindi)

Dr Mobeen Shafique is a Consultant Radiologist at AFIRI and an Associate Professor of Radiology at AMC Rawalpindi.
